Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust,
and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done,
and thy thoughts which are to us-ward:
they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee:
if I would declare and speak of them,

Lesson #24, Genesis 24:28-67, Isaac Gets a Wife
After meeting the servant of Abraham at the well, Rebekah quickly ran to tell her family that they head a visitor. Rebekah had a brother whose name was Laban. After hearing Rebekah’s story, and seeing the earring and bracelets on his sister’s hands, he ran out to Abraham’s servants who was still standing at the well. Laban said, “Come in, you that are blessed of the Lord. Why are you standing out here? I have prepared the house for your arrival and there is a place for your camels also.”
Then the servant followed Laban home. When they arrived, the man unsaddled the camels, and gave them food. He also gave the servant water to wash his feet, and water for the men’s feet that were with him. After everyone was comfortable, food was set before the servant of Abraham, but the servant said, “I will not eat anything until I tell you why I have come and what my errand is.”
Laban said, “Tell us what you have to say.”
The traveler said, “I am Abraham’s servant. The Lord has blessed my master greatly. He has many flocks and herds, silver and gold, men servants and maid servants, camels and asses. My master’s wife Sarah bare him a son, when she was old, and Abraham has given everything that he has to his son. My master made me sware an oath, that I would not get a wife for his son from his own family. I asked my master what to do if the woman would not come with me. My master told me that the Lord who he serves would send his angel ahead of me and give me success in finding a wife for Isaac. But if not, then I am no longer obligated to the oath.
I came to the well today, and asked God to show me who he had chosen for Isaac by sending the young lady, and making her willing, not only to give me drink, but also to give water to all my camels, Rebecca was answer to my prayer to the Lord. When she told me that she was the daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, Abraham’s brother, then I praised God for leading me to the young woman he had chosen. Now I must know, will you allow Rebekah to marry Isaac, my master’s son? Please be honest with me, so that I will know what I must do.”
Then Rebekah’s brother Laban, and her father Bethuel replied, “This is God’s plan, and we can not go against it. Here is Rebekah, take to your master’s son wife, as that I will know what I must do.”
When Abraham’s servant heard these words, he bowed and worshipped the Lord. He brought out jewels of silver, jewels of gold, and clothing which he gave to Rebekah. He also gave her brother and mother precious things. Then everyone ate and drank in celebration of the coming marriage.
The next morning, the servant and those with him then got up and made plans to return to Abraham. But Laban and Rebekah’s mother said, “Let her stay with us a few days more, at least ten, and then she can go with you.”
The servant said, “Do not keep me here, seeing the Lord as prospered me. Send me back to my master.”
Rebekah’s family said, “We will call Rebekah and see what she wishes to do.”
Rebekah was called, and asked, “Do you wish to go with this man?”
She replied, “I will.”
So they sent Rebekah away with Abraham’s servant. They sent Rebekah’s nurse with here. Rebekah’s family blessed Rebekah, saying, “You are our sister. Be the mother of millions, and let your dependents posses the property of those that hate them.”
After the blessing, Rebekah, left there family. She took her maidservants, and they rode upon camels and followed the servant of Abraham back to his home.
Isaac came from the well Lahairoi, for he lived in the south country. He had gone out into the field to mediate at the evening time, and when he looked up he saw camels coming.
Rebekah also looked up at the same time, and she saw Isaac. She got off her camel, and asked the servant, “What man is this that is walking in the field to meet us?”
The servant replied, “It is my master.” So Rebekah took her veil and covered her face.
The servant told Isaac all the things that he had done, and how God had blessed his journey.
Then Isaac took Rebekah for his wife, and he loved her. Rebekah brought Isaac comfort after his mother’s death.
What a beautiful picture this is for us of God’s love for his own children, and how he provides the best for us, if we follow his plan. We see that it was not only Abraham who trusted that the Lord would provide the perfect wife for his son, but also the servant trusted and obeyed the Lord. Rebekah trusted God’s choice for her, and Isaac trusted God’s choice for him. So they were all blessed and were able to be content and joyful, for God’s way always brings you and contentment.
