If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God,
that giveth to all men liberally,
and upbraideth not;
and it shall be given him.

Download Lesson #20, Genesis 24, A Wife for Isaac
Sarah died when she was 127 years old. Abraham bought land with a cave on it so Sarah could be buried near where they lived in the land of Canaan. Abraham was very old. Isaac was grown now, but he was not yet married. Abraham knew that the choice of a wife for Isaac was very important. The wife could either encourage him in godly ways or draw him away from the Lord. So Abraham made his servant promise to go back to the country where he had lived before to get a wife for Isaac from among his relatives.
Abraham told his servant not to take Isaac back there but to bring his wife-to-be to Canaan, the land the Lord had promised to give to Abraham’s descendants.
So the servant took ten camels and went to the city where Abraham’s brother lived. He stopped at a well outside the city where the women came late in the afternoon to get water. The servant prayed that the Lord would help him find the right women to be Isaac’s wife.
Before he had finished his prayer, a beautiful young girl came to the well carrying a water with a jar on her shoulder. She filled the jar at the well and stated back home. The servant ran to her and asked for a drink. She gave him water and said, “I will also draw water for your camels.” This was the very sign for which the servant had prayed!
After the girl watered the camels, the servant talked with her and found out that her name was Rebekah and that she was a relative of Abraham! The servant worshipped God helping him find this girl.
Rebekah ran home and told her family what had happened. Her brother Laban then went to the well an invited Abraham’s servant to come spend the night in his house. Then the servant explained about Abrahm. He told now Abraham wanted a wife for Isaac from among his relatives and how the Lord had led him to Rebekah.
Rebekah’s father and brother gave their permission for Rebekah to go to be Isaac’s wife. It was clear that this was what God wanted. So the servant and Rebekah set off for Canaan the next day.
Isaac took Rebekah to be his wife, and he loved her. This he was comforted by Rebekah after the death of his mother.
God has planned for just the right person for each of his children to marry. It is important to realize that God would only wanted us to marry a person that loves God with their whole heart. God would never want us to marry someone who would turn our hearts away from him. So remember as you get older and start to think about getting married to choose the person that God has chosen for you. Asking God for wisdom and direction is the only way to find the right person.
