Adult Bible Study: Bible Women Lesson 17

REBEKAH – Part 5

Learn: Psalm 34:7, 8

The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

Read: Genesis 27: 46; 28:1-22

1.The final verse of chapter 27 actually belongs with chapter 28. It is true that Rebekah wanted to send Jacob away because of Esau’s threat against his life. For if Esau had killed Jacob, he would in all likely hood have been put to death for the murder of his brother. Then, as Rebekah had said in verse 45, she would have lost both of her sons. What was the other reason that Rebekah wanted Jacob to be sent to her brother Laban? Genesis 27:46

2. How does Isaac declare his unity and agreement with Rebekah concerning the necessity of Jacob marrying a godly woman? Genesis 28:1, 2

3. We see that at this point Isaac has repented from his previous plan to disobey God and make Esau his heir rather than Jacob. Remember that God had clearly told Rebekah and Isaac before the boys were even born that the older was to serve the younger. Jacob was the younger brother. What are the three parts to the blessing that Isaac gave to Jacob before sending him away to find a godly wife?  vv 3, 4

4. How does the blessing that Isaac gave to Jacob at this point compare to or contrast with the blessing that Isaac gave Jacob (when he thought he was Esau) in Genesis 27:28, 29?

5. Isaac said that Jacob should be blessed with the blessing that God gave to Abraham. What important part of the Abrahamic blessing did Isaac not mention specifically as he blessed Jacob?  Genesis 12:1-3

6. To where and to whom did Isaac and Rebekah send Jacob?  v 5

7. What does Isaac correctly do at this time which had been his responsibility all along so that the godly line of the promised Seed that began with Abraham was to continue?  v 6

8. What did Esau finally understand when Rebekah and Isaac sent Jacob away to find a wife who was not a Canaanite?   vv 6-8

9. Though Esau finally understood that his Canaanite wives displeased his parents, he didn’t really understand the reason why his parents were displeased with his wives. What did Esau do to try and correct the problem?  v 9

10. What 3 things about Esau’s third choice to marry showed that his understanding was not spiritual, but was limited to what he could understand from a human perspective?  vv 8, 9

Deuteronomy 7:3, 4

Ezra 10:10, 11

James 1:5

11. What do we learn about Jacob from verse 7?

12. Use a Bible map and verse 10 to see where Jacob traveled as he went to seek a wife.

13. Jacob had traveled about 70 miles north from Beer-sheba, what happened to Jacob as spent the night at this location? vv 11-12

14. Who did Jacob see in his dream? v 13a

NOTE: It was obvious that this was no ordinary ladder. The Hebrew word is “sullam”, and is used only this one time in the Bible. Whatever its exact form, it clearly pictured to Jacob the interrelationships of earth and heaven. It showed there is intense interest in heaven concerning what takes place on earth, with multitudes of mighty ministers of God coming down to earth to carry out God’s commands, then returning to report concerning the earth and to receive further instructions.  Though they are normally invisible to the human eye, Scripture teaches much concerning them.                                                               THE GENESIS RECORD   pp 447-448   Dr. Henry Morris

15. What do the following Scriptures tell us about God’s ministering servants?

Hebrews 12:22

Psalm 103:20

Hebrews 1:13, 14 (especially verse 14)

Luke 15:10

I Peter 1:10-12 especially verse 12)

Psalm 34:7

Psalm 91:9-11(especially verse 11)

16. Who do these promises specifically apply to, and who does not receive the promise of theses ministering servants of God.  Psalm 91:8-11

17. What promise was Jacob given in the dream? vv 13b -15

18. Jacob’s sudden flight from home, all alone and to a place and people that he did not know, must have been in many ways frightening. What comforting promise did the LORD make to Jacob, along with the continuation to Jacob (as the next designated descendant) of the Abrahamic covenant? v 15b

19. What was Jacob aware of as he awoke from his dream?  vv 16, 17

20. What did Jacob do to commemorate this location of his dream and God’s promise to him in the dream?  vv 18, 19

21. What is the meaning of the name Bethel that Jacob gave to the place where the LORD appeared unto him?  v 17

22. What promise did Jacob make to God at Bethel?  vv 20-22

23. As far as we can tell from Scripture, Jacob never saw his mother Rebekah again. Scripture does not tell us when Rebekah died, but it does give the location of her burial.  Where was Rebekah buried?   Genesis 49:30-32
