Adult Bible Study: Exodus Lesson 6

EXODUS –LESSON 6

LEARN: John 3:16-18

3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

READ: Exodus 3:13-22

When God gave the name I AM THAT I AM to Moses, he was telling us all that it is  only the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob that can say “I.” He is not represented by some dumb idol, voiceless save through the traditions of those who worship it. He who says “I AM” thus registers in his word and expression which will have meaning and suggestiveness in every language under heaven. When we come upon that name in the discussion between Jesus and the Jewish leaders, they speak haughtily concerning great names of the past. PULPIT COMMENTARY – EXODUS p 78

1. What did Jesus say to the Jewish leaders in John 8:58?

2. What does John 8:58 clearly say about Abraham and every other person who has ever  lived as compared to Jesus?

3. In verse 15 what does the LORD again remind Moses that he shall tell the children of  Israel?

4. What is the benefit of recalling that He is the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob for the people of Israel or us?  OR   How can pondering on the narrative concerning these men bring us to a profitable and comforting knowledge of God?

5. As the LORD reminds Moses of who He is, He says, “This is my name forever, and this is my memorial to all generations.” In telling Israel and through His Word all the nations that His name forever is the God of Israel and Isaac and Jacob, what is He also telling all the world through all the years?

6. According to the words “forever, and “to all generations,” can we expect that there will ever be a change of God’s outlook towards the nation of Israel for actions or words on their part?

7. Since this constancy of God’s promise to the children of Israel is reiterated many times in the Scriptures, what response is then required of all those who name the name of Jesus Christ as their Savior towards the Jewish people and the nation of Israel?See Romans 11:25-29, especially verse 29.

8. The LORD tells Moses to gather the elders of Israel. What is he to tell them? vv 16, 17

9. According to verse 18, would the elders of the people believe what Moses told them?

10. What was next in the command of the LORD for Moses?  v 18

11. What is the importance of a delegation of the elders of Israel going with Moses to  speak to the king of Egypt?

12. In verse 18 we see that the petitioners ask for only a small part of what God requires. What does this request indicate to the elders of Israel about their own relationship to God?

13. What did the request search out about Pharaoh himself?

14. How would the king of Egypt answer God’s command to him? v 19

15. Since God already knew what would happen in advance with both the elders of Israel and the king of Egypt, what does that tell us about God?  Colossians 2:2,3

16. If God knows all things, including what will happen before it actually happens, does  that mean that He causes all things?   OR   Is foreknowledge the same thing as predestination?

17. What are some things that we know that God does not cause?

James 1:13, 14

John 3:17, 18

18. In verse 20, what does the LORD make clear will be the final outcome, though

Pharaoh will refuse to let them go in the beginning?

19. The Egyptians had become wealthy by their oppression of the Israelites. What did God promise?  vv 21,22
