EXODUS –LESSON 5
LEARN: John 15:3-5
Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
READ: Exodus 3:7-14
1. In verse 6 the LORD identified Himself to Moses as the God of his fathers, the God who revealed Himself to Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, the God who entered into covenant with them When Moses heard these words, what was his action? v 6b
2. Whenever we see someone confronted by the holy God in Scripture, what is always their response?
Isaiah 6:3-5 (especially note verse 5)
Ezekiel 1: 25-28 (especially note verse 28)
Daniel 10: 4-8 (especially verse 8)
Matthew 17:1-6 (especially verse 6)
Revelation 1:12-17 (especially verse 17)
3. From the response of these godly men to being in the presence of the Lord as He reveals Himself in His glory, what conclusion can we draw?
4. At this time in the world most people refuse to respond to the Lord our Creator according to who He is (and in fact, some altogether defy Him). People do not acknowledge that we are only part of His creation, not the creator of our own destiny. Will that always be the case?
Philippians 2:9-11 Explain.
5. The choice is for every man or woman to make. We can bow to the Redeemer and Creator during this life and acknowledge Him as our God now and live in fellowship with Him all our days on earth, as well as throughout eternity. But if we refuse to bow the knee to Him in this life time, we will bow when He comes to judge. What will that judgment be for those who refuse God’s wonderful gift of salvation which is offered to everyone in their lifetime on earth? Revelation 20:11-15
6. What did the LORD say to Moses out of the burning bush? vv 7, 8
7. What did God specifically call these people? v 7
8. From reading verses 7 and 8, what are specific things that you can learn about the LORD? Use the following verses to learn if your understanding of God is correct according to His Word: Psalm 11:4; Psalm 34:15; Lamentations 3:19-23; John 8:23
NOTE: The phrase first used here and so common in the later books Numbers, Deuteronomy, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, “flowing with milk and honey,” was a proverbial expression for “a land of plenty,” and not intended literally.
9. In verse 9 God reiterates that He has seen the suffering and heard the cries of the children of Israel. What is the LORD’S plan of rescue for His people? v 10
10. Moses’ answer to the command of God to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt showed that he was a changed man from who he had been forty years ago. Contrast the Moses of this time with the Moses of the past. v 11 See also Acts 7:21-25.
11. Moses told God that he was unfit and inadequate for the job (recorded in verse 12). God’s answer was that He would be with Moses and that is all that he needed to accomplish God’s work. As all believers must come to realize, none of us are fit or adequate for what He calls us to do. We must each understand that we can only accomplish God’s work if He does the work through us. We must come to completely rely on Him. What do the following Scriptures teach?
II Corinthians 12:9
Philippians 4:13
John 15:4, 5
12. The LORD also gave Moses a sign or token that he would actually accomplish the task given to him. If Moses accepted God’s sign, though it would be seen only in the future, what would that show about Moses? v 12 See Hebrews 11:1 for help.
13. What was Moses’ next concern about going to the children of Israel? v 13
NOTE: All the gods of Egypt had names. The God of Israel was called the God of their fathers. He had also been known as “El,” “The High;” “Shaddai,” “The Strong;” and Jehovah,” “The Existent;” but these terms had all been felt to be descriptive epithets, and none of them had passed as yet into a proper name.
PUPIT COMMENTARY –EXODUS p 57
14. What name did the LORD give to Moses to make Himself known to the children of Israel? v 14
NOTE: I AM THAT I AM. The inner meaning of Yahweh – I am the ONE who is”- emphasizes God’s dynamic and active self-existence. He is “The Alone Existent”- the source of all existence. This name came to predominate over every other, was cherished by the Jews themselves as a sacred treasure, and recognized by those around as the proper appellation for the one and only God whom the Israelites worshipped. It was not pronounced in later years by pious Jews for fear of violating the command of Exodus 20:7. Instead they substituted the word Adonai (Lord) whenever Yahweh occurred. The use of large and small capitals (Lord)) in the Bible text indicates the Hebrew word is Yahweh.

15. What is the command of Exodus 20:7?
16. Using the dictionary explain the meaning of “taking God’s name in vain.”
17. Can using another name for God than what He has Himself designated be effective in keeping the command of Exodus 20:7?
