The First Woman Eve–Part 3
Learn:
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
Isaiah 53:4, 5
Read: Genesis 3:14-4:2
1. God gave Adam and Eve opportunity to acknowledge and repent of their sin, at this point they were still blaming someone else for what they had done. Who had they sinned against? Use David’s confession from Psalm 51:3, 4 to explain your answer.
2. We know from I John 1:9, that if we confess our sin, God will forgive us our sin. But God is just, and what he says must come to pass or he would be a liar. What had God said would be the consequence of disobedience? Genesis 2:17
3. The consequence of death encompassed not only the physical life of Adam and Eve, but also death of the perfect life they had known in Eden. Their sin also brought death and destructive consequences to all of God’s perfect creation. List the way that sin and death would affect each of the following parts of the creation from this time forward until Jesus would come again to make all things new. Genesis 3:14-19 The serpent, which became a vehicle for Satan for to bring temptation – v 14
The woman – v 16
Adam – vv 17b, 18a, 19
The relationship of Adam and Eve – Genesis 3:12
The ground – vv 17b, 18a
An animal – v 21
The tree of life – v 22
Their home – v 24
All creatures – Romans 8:20
All of creation – Romans 8:22
The relationship of Adam and Eve to God – Genesis 3:8, 10, 12
4. How does knowing the extent of the consequences that sin brought help us understand Romans 6:23
5. Geneses 3: 15 is the first place in Scripture that we start to see God’s provision to rescue mankind from the bondage and consequences of sin. What is the promise?
6. Define the word enmity.
7. To understand exactly what Genesis 3:15 means, we must compare Scripture to Scripture. Seeds when used in Scripture in this way refers to descendants. We see in this case that for both for the serpent and for Eve, the word “seed” is singular, referring to a particular descendant or type of descendant. Who is this “serpent”? John 8:44
Who are the “seed” of the serpent? Ephesians 2:2, 3
Who is the “Seed” of the woman? John 1:14; Romans 1:3; Galatians 4:4
8. If a serpent’s head is crushed, what does that mean for the serpent?
9. There will be suffering for the Seed of the woman as he destroys the Serpent. Use Isaiah 53:3-5 to describe the suffering of the Seed on behalf of mankind.
10. When did the Seed come to earth and carry the sin of the whole world, so that all who call upon his name can be saved and have eternal life with him in heaven? Luke 2:1-11 Especially note verses 1-5 to get the exact time in history, which can be checked by historical records.
11. How did the Seed accomplish the victory over Satan and death? Hebrews 5:8, 9; Philippians 2:5-8
12. What did the Seed do that showed that he had truly been over victorious over Satan and death? Romans 6:9, 10
13. We can rejoice that though all creation is under the curse of sin, those who trust in the Seed, that is Jesus Christ, are released from that curse and will live eternally in a perfect home with Jesus who paid our penalty. Each individual must make their own choice as to whether they will trust God and be reconciled to him who made us, or if we will believe the lies of Satan, the deceiver. Use the following verses to learn whether Eve repented of her rebellion and trusted in the LORD. Genesis 4:1
Genesis 4:25
14. How was it that Eve listened to Satan, and made the wrong choice? I Timothy 2:14
15. Is it possible for a believer in Jesus to be deceived as Eve was deceived by Satan? Explain using the following verses. II Corinthians 11:3, 4, 13-15
16. Should you and I be worried about being deceived? Explain your answer.
17. How can we avoid being deceived? Acts 17:11
Hebrews 10:22
Hebrews 10:23
Hebrews 10:24
Hebrews 10:25
18. The Bible gives us these historical accounts of people like Eve, not just for the sake of a story, but for examples for us on how to live and of what we should not do. What example can you take for your own life from the lessons on Eve?
