Learn: Hebrews 12:11-14

11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

12 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;

13 And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.

14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

Read: Hebrews 12:1-17

1.Review verse 11. What word is used to transition to the actions which need to be taken? v 12, We are to move past our discomfort to what 5 SPECIFIC actions? vv 12-15 

 

2. Verse 12 is a direct quote from Isaiah 35:3. Use the context of Isaiah 35:1-4 to explain what is meant. What are we to be?  How is this accomplished? 

 

3. What is verse 13a referring to? Psalm 119:105; Proverbs 4:26, 27

  

4. Going through sore trials can bring brokenness (lameness), if we do not follow God’s instruction for dealing with it, what will happen? v 13b  

     Following God’s direction will lead to __________________________ of our hurting hearts. v 13c

8. Verse 14 also commands that we “follow” holiness. What is meant by “follow” as used here?

10. Find other Scripture that speaks about the believers need to seek holiness in our lives.

11. We are not holy as God is holy, so what must we understand on how we can attain that “holiness” without which we cannot see the Lord? Romans 6: 22, 23

12. What do we need to constantly be on the lookout for in our lives which would cause us to fail of the grace of God? v 15 

13. What does the word diligence bring to mind?

15. How will “bitterness” defile a believer? James 3:6; Matthew 15:11; I Corinthians 8:7b; Titus 1:15

16. Give examples from Scripture of those who became embittered and so show that they had been defiled by what they said and did.

17. Give examples of the defiling of bitterness from experience of yourself or those around you.

18. How far will the fruit of bitterness reach out to others? Deuteronomy 29:18

19. How does seeing what bitterness does to a believer keep you from allowing the bitterness of loss or hurt, unresolved relationships with believers, suffering, to spring up in your own life?

20. What Scriptures would you find helpful when such circumstances come to you that could cause bitterness to rise up in your heart?

21. What did the bitterness of Esau bring about in his life? v 16, 17; Genesis 27:34-36; 41-43

NOTE: Esau may not have been a fornicator in the physical sense, but he was spiritually, for he cared only for the things of the world and not for God.

22. What was the final result of Esau’s bitterness in his own life?  v 17
