Hebrews Lesson 29

Learn: Hebews 11:24-26

24 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter;

25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;

26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.

Here is Hebrews 11, we see faith demonstrated in the lives of those called the “fathers” of the Nation of Israel. The details of the lives of these men of faith: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, are given in the book of Genesis. 

  1. What are we told about Isaac in verse 20?
  2. When Isaac gave his blessing, what did Isaac need to disregard? Genesis 25:28
  3. What did Isaac need to base the blessing that he gave his 2 sons upon? Genesis 25:21-23
  4. Though it might seem to us that Rebecca was in the wrong in the way that she made sure that God’s will was carried out and that Jacob received the blessing and not Esau, who was the eldest, what does the Lord tell us in Romans 9:9-13?
  5. The account of the blessing of Jacob given in Genesis 27:1-40 show to us that in spite of the great difficulty it brought to her, Rebecca was a women of ____________________ as described in Hebrews 11:1-3, 6.
    NOTE: The Lord never rebuked Rebecca for her part in getting Jacob the blessing and she kept her husband from sinning and bringing God’s judgment upon him for disobedience to God’s revealed plan.
  6. In Malachi 1:2, 3 the subject of Jacob and Esau is again brought to our minds. Who made the decision as to which son was to receive the blessing, that is be in the lineage of our Saviour Jesus Christ and also be the spiritual leader of the family? What was required on the part of Isaac and Rebecca in this matter?
  7. According to Jewish tradition and in most cultures it is the firstborn son who receives the blessing, which in the case of Jacob and Esau would have been Esau. But God did not choose those who were to carry his blessing in this way. What does I Samuel 16:7 say?

  9. How did Jacob show his faith in God by the blessing he gave to Joseph’s sons?  v 21  Genesis 48:8-20
  10. Since verse 21 says that Jacob did this blessing by faith, what must we understand though it is not clearly stated?

  13. How does Joseph’s dying command as seen in verse 22 illustrate Hebrews 11:1?
  14. What characteristic of Moses’ parents illustrates their faith? v 23b

  16. Who were Moses’ parents?   Exodus 6:16-20?
  17. How did Moses’ parents protect the life of Moses when other parents were trying and failing to save their baby sons, or were throwing their sons into the Nile for fear of the king?  List each part of the plan:

  18. What did the parents of Moses believe that gave the strength to carry out their plan?

  19. Because Moses’ parents were godly people who had faith in the Lord, we know that their ability to make a plan to save Moses and follow it through came from______________________.

NOTE: In ancient Egypt, the Nile River was considered the most important god in the Egyptian list of gods. This made Moses appear to be divine in nature and purpose among the Egyptians
