EXODUS –LESSON 32

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: 

10 which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

1.How long had the children of Israel been traveling when they reached the wilderness of Sinai? v 1

2. What would be the benefit for the nation at such a location, (the wilderness and the desert) as regards to spiritual matters?

3. What specific place is peculiar to this location in the desert? v 2

NOTE: The rest of this book, plus Leviticus and the first ten chapters of Numbers, contain the block of teaching known as the Mosaic Law. It was given in the form of a contemporary suzerainty treaty, a treaty between a powerful king and his vassals. A typical treaty contained a preamble (v.3), historical introduction (with emphasis on the benevolence of the king, v.4), specific obligations of the vassals, witnesses to the treaty, and a list of the consequences of keeping or breaking the treaty (I.e. blessings and curses.)    Ryrie Study Bible   Exodus 19:3 commentary

4. Upon arrival, Moses soon made his way up into the mount. Who called to Moses out of the mount, and to whom was a message addressed?   v 3

5. What does using the designation “the house of Jacob” guarantee, as to whom the LORD is speaking and making this covenant with?  See Genesis 28:10-14; 35:11-15

6. There were three parts to this message: the first part is a reminder to remembrance. History or past relationship sets the tone for future relationship. In this case, what is Israel to remember? v 4

7. God describes his care of Israel as bearing them on “eagles’ wings.” How is this metaphor expanded further in Deuteronomy 32:11-14?

8. How does the phrase “brought you unto myself” of verse 4, convey to the nation the reason for their arrival at Sinai?

9. The second part: Starting with the word “Now,” what does the Lord desire of Israel? v 5a.

10. The third part: If they obey the Lord as he desires, what does he promise (the benefits)?  v5b

11. What is a “peculiar treasure?”

12. How does the LORD care for and regard his peculiar treasure Israel? Isaiah 44:1-4,   Deuteronomy 14:2

13. According to verse 6, what did the LORD require of the nation that is at the same time a privilege?

14. As a nation of priests, they were able to draw near to God directly in _______________, though not

15. Using Scriptures that you find, give the duties of priests; first for the priests of Israel, then for the priesthood of believers.

16. What brought the change that no longer required the Levitical priesthood, but made each believer a priest unto the Lord. Use Scripture to back your answer.

17. As each believer in Jesus is a priest unto the Lord, should any group that calls themselves Christian have a class of priests that comes between God and man?                  Explain your answer using Scripture to validate it.

18. Explain what is meant by a “holy nation.” Deuteronomy 7:5-11

19. How is what the LORD tells Christians in I Peter 2:1-10 about being a royal priesthood and a holy nation, in some ways the same, but also different?
