EXODUS –LESSON 22
LEARN: Romans 8:31, 32, 38, 39
31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
READ: Exodus 14:1-31
1. The children of Israel had been traveling in a south easterly direction which would have taken them into the desert region east of the Bitter Lakes, which was a dry, treeless, and waterless area.. Use a Bible map to get an idea of where they were. Now God changed their direction to due south. This course would keep them in Egypt, with the sea on their east. According to verse 3, why did the Lord direct in this way?
2. The places mentioned in verse 2 are unknown to the sacred writers, but we see that the writer of Exodus is very familiar with the geography of the country. What does this indicate about when this back was written?
3. A short respite from suffering was sufficient to enable Pharaoh to recover from his extreme alarm after all the firstborn had been killed.. He was sorry that he had let his slaves go free. Once Pharaoh thought that the Israelites were trapped, what did he determine to do and why? vv 4a, 5, 6
4. As is stated in verse 2, the LORD proclaimed before it happened what would occur. In all this situation we see that the LORD is control, and though Pharaoh doesn’t realize it, God has a final outcome in mind. What is it? v 4b
5. What do the following verses tell us about the rulers of this world?
Proverbs 8:15, 16
Proverbs 21:1
Psalm 2:2-4
6. This was to be a quick pursuit. What military might did Pharaoh use to go against the people of Israel? v 7
7. Pharaoh himself was emotionally involved in this pursuit. How did he show it? v 6
NOTE: The six hundred “chosen chariots” set in motion on this occasion probably consisted of the royal bodyguard, as the Egyptian kings were likely to have as many as 1200 chariots as seen concerning Shishak in II Chronicles 12:3. PULPIT COMMENTARY Genesis Exodus p. 321
8. What was the attitude of the children of Israel when they left Egypt? v 8
9. When Israel saw the coming of Pharaoh with his forces what happened to the confidence that they had experienced as they left Egypt? v 10
10. Though Israel was a multitude of people, and Pharaoh’s army was much smaller in number, from a human perspective they would naturally be fearful. Why? See Exodus 1:11-14; 13:34, 37; 14:9
11. What was the word of the people to Moses as they fell prey to fear? vv 11, 12
NOTE: The spirit needed to prefer death to slavery, where they are the only alternatives, is NOT a common one; and we must not be surprised that a people which had grown up in servitude and had no traditions of national independence did not rise to the heroic height attained under other circumstances by Greeks, by Switzers, and by Poles. It would have been extraordinary if they had done so.
PULPIT COMMENTARY Genesis Exodus p 327

13. What counsel did Moses give to the people as an antidote to their fear? v13

17. What does the Lord give us to replace fear in our lives?
