Hebrews Lesson 11
Learn: Philippians 2:5-8
5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Read: Hebrews 5:1-14
This passage reminds us that Christ is superior in his qualifications as our High Priest, as compared to other high priests of the Hebrew/Jewish people.
-
- What is the origination and necessary qualification of every high priest, including Jesus Christ? v 1a
- Why is the high priest ordained? v 1b
- The Greek preposition that is translate “for” is the word huper which means “in behalf of.” Use Exodus 28:9-12 to give example or explanation from Aaron the first High Priest.
- What does verse 1 tell us IS the focus of the priesthood? What is NOT the focus of the priesthood?
- Define the word ordained.
- What is the function or purpose of the high priest? v 1c, Also see Hebrews 8:3
- According to Hebrews 9:14, how did our Lord Jesus differ in his offering of sacrifice from the other high priests? In other words, Jesus is both __________________and __________________________.
- What was the necessary characteristic of the high priest in order that he might minister effectively? v 2a
- Record Scripture that shows that Jesus himself had this characteristic necessary to minister for us. NOTE: the Greek word for “compassion” is the word metriopathein which refers to one who does not act with anger or hostility.
- Use Psalm 103:13, 14 and Lamentations 3:22, 23, 31, 32 to describe the compassion of the Lord toward us.
- We see that the high priest’s compassion is on the “ignorant.” According to Psalm 14:1-3; Proverbs 4:19, who are the ignorant?
- The high priest’s compassion is toward those who are “out of the way.” Who are “those that are out of the way?” Isaiah 53:6
- What is the contrast between all earthly priests and our Lord Jesus ( our Great high Priest)? vv 2, 3, Also see Leviticus 4:3; 9:7; 16:6, 24 versus Hebrews 4:15; II Corinthians 5:21
- Use verse 5 along with verse 4 to explain how the calling of our Lord Jesus was similar to the calling of every other high priest.
- Using verses 4 and 5, explain what the “call” refers to?
- What two words in verses 4 and 5 are used to show that the position of high priest was special?
- When God the Father appointed Christ Jesus high priest, what two specific statements were made about him? v 5
- Does the phrase “today I have begotten thee” indicate that Jesus was AT THAT POINT IN TIME created as some cults teach? Explain using Scripture.
- The Aaronic priesthood was ordained by God, but way back in I Samuel 2:35, what does God tell us? Also see Psalm 110:1-4 (esp v 4), Zechariah 6:12, 13
- All high priests were part of the Aaronic Priesthood, that is, in order to be appointed by God one must be a descendant of Aaron the first High Priest. He had been declared High Priest by God as we see in the book of Exodus at the time of the giving of the 10 Commandments on Mt Sinai. Those who were priests under Aaron, were temporary for they all died, and then another man took their place. What 2 things do we see that are different about the priesthood of Christ? v 6
- What time is spoken of when Jesus offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears to the Father? Luke 22:39-46
- What does the word “offered up” as Jesus made supplications to the Father indicate? See v 1 to help with your answer.
- As Jesus made these prayers and supplications to the Father what was he indicating about himself towards his Father? Luke 22:42
- In Luke 22:42 we learn that the reason for the prayers and supplications of Jesus was that “this cup” might be removed from him. We know from other Scripture that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit had before determined that Jesus would die to bear the penalty for our sins. So it could not mean that he was wanting to escape that suffering and death which was necessary for our salvation. What then is the meaning of “unto him that was able to save him FROM death? Acts 2:23-27
- How was Jesus’ prayer answered? Luke 24:1-6
- Through his supplication to the father, what example did Jesus show and set forth to us? v 8
- Record other verses where Jesus proclaims his obedience to the will of the Father.
- In verse 9, the phrase ”and being made perfect” literally means “having been made perfect”- it is completed! Jesus finished the task set before him. What did his perfection bring about for us? v 9
- In verse 4 of this chapter we are told that Jesus was “called” of God for the Task of high Priest to all who would believe on his name. Now in verse 10, we see again that Jesus is “called” of God, but there is a different emphasis (actually a different Greek word is used). From the context of the previous verses which speak of Jesus’ obedience to the Father, what is meant by “called” as used here? Acts 2:22
- In verse 10 we are being introduced, what is the introduction indicating to us?
