Hebrews Lesson 10
Learn: Hebrews 4:14-16
14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. 15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
Read: Hebrews 4:1-16
- We continue on with the topic of “rest.” From verse 10 we see that he, meaning Jesus, finished his works and has entered into his rest, and we see that God finished his work of creation and did rest from that labour. According to verse 11, what is needed on the part of we as believers so that we may enter into “that rest?”
- It is clear from many passages of Scripture that the “rest“ that is gained by this labour spoken of in verse 11 is not speaking of eternal life. Give Scripture that proves that salvation (eternal life with God) is totally dependent on the Lord Jesus’ work on our behalf and not on any work that we can do to earn it.
- Use the following verses to explain the meaning of the phrase “let us labour” as it is used in verse 11. Ephesians 4:3; II Timothy 2:15; II Peter 1:10, 3:14
- The phrase ”same example” connects to what in Hebrews chapter 3:7-19?
- What is the “unbelief” that is referred to in Hebrews 4:2b that same passage?
- What is the danger to those who claim to be believers, but they make no effort towards entering into God’s “rest?” v 11
- Since we know that the promise of eternal rest is a gift to us by the grace of God and has nothing to do with our effort or work (Ephesians 2:8, 9), and yet if verse 11 states that if we don’t labor we can fall short of that rest, there must be Scripture that will make clear to us what may seem to us to be a contradiction. For we know that our God is consistent and clear on what he requires of those who come to him for eternal rest or salvation; that being to “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and though shalt be saved.” The labor then must be an evidence of our having that rest, rather that the method of obtaining God’s rest. Use the examples of Abraham and Rahab as given in James 2:14-26 to explain this.
- List the five descriptions of the Word of God given in verse 12. Then use the Scripture listed to explain further. (1) Acts 7:38; I Peter 1:23 (2) Isaiah 55:11 (3) Isaiah 49:2; Revelation 2:12; 19:15 (4) I Thessalonians 56:23 (5) Luke 2:35; Matthew 12:25
- Verse 12 tells us about the Word of God, it power and capabilities. Verse 13 continues to speak of the Word of God, but now a pronoun is used to speak of the Word, what is it? What does the use of the pronoun indicate?
- What are we told about He, who is the Word of God in verse 13?
- The attribute described in verse 13 is called Omniscience, meaning all-knowing. Who alone has this ability?
- Record other Scripture verses that confirm that it is God alone that is Omniscient.
- Knowing what the Scripture says in the above verses about Omniscience, if any religious system teaches that another being, such as Mary or others that have lived in the past also have some abilities of knowing thoughts or one’s past or future, how should we regard that system, no matter who promotes it?
- Why? What is our authority?
- Verse 13 teaches that nothing is hidden from the sight or knowledge of God, The Word. What does the last phrase of that verse teach to us?
- Back in Hebrews 2:17 we are told that our Lord is a _______________________________ and ____________________________ ____________ _____________________.
- In Hebrews 3:1 we are told to “…consider the ____________ ___________________of our profession, Jesus Christ.”
- What are two things that we learn about our High Priest from verse 14 that show the importance of knowing that He is our High Priest?
- Who is our High Priest identified to be? v 14
- NOTE: The word “Son” is not the Greek word for child by birth nor is it the word for a child by age. It is the Greek word huios which refers to and “heir” – one who is given the inheritance (Psalm 2:7-8).
- What is this great High Priest doing for us in the heavens? Romans 8:34
- What is our instruction because we have such a great High Priest? v 14
- What are two ways in which Christ our High Priest is different from any other high priest? v 15
- Because of our High Priest, what are we encouraged to do? v 16a v 16b v 16c
- What is the ‘throne of grace”? Psalm 34:18, 19
