Hebrews Lesson 9
Learn: Hebrews 4:11-13
11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. 12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.
Read: Hebrews 4:1-16
1.This passage begins with an exhortation “let us therefore fear” which connects it to the last chapter. This exhortation given to believers is concerning the children of Israel in the wilderness. From verse 19 of chapter three, what is the consequence to Israel that leads to this admonition?
2. What is the theme of verses 1-10?
3. What is the promise of God to all believers? v 1
4. In spite of God’s promise to them, what does verse 1 tell us happens, so that many believers (which is just what happened to the children of Israel) live in turmoil and stress? v 1
5. The “rest” offered to the children of Israel and used as an example to believers (Numbers 14:2, 22, 23) was ___________________________________________ The “rest” offered to believers in Jesus (Hebrews 4:10 is___ ________________________________________________________________________________. How are the two “rests” spoken of different from each other?
6. Even though the “rests” are different in some ways, yet the reason for not achieving either rest offered by God is the same. What is it? v 2 7. On first examination it would seem as we have discussed above that was preached to each group is different, but is it really? v 2 Explain.
8. What is it that ties these two different types of rest together, so that even though they may seem to have a different outworking, in actuality they have the same result if one enters in? v 2, Hebrews 11:6 It is _________________ which results in ___________________________ ___________.
9. We see from verse 2 that the truth was consistently preached to those in the wilderness and that often it is well preached to believers also. But we understand that having the Word preached, though it is necessary to hear it in order to know of God’s offered rest, hearing alone is not sufficient to give the hearer the rest that has been offered. What else is needed which is the evidence of belief or faith? James 1:22 a
10. How does James describe someone who has the Word preached to them but does not obey it? James 1:22
11. How does James describe the person whose hearing of the Word is not mixed with belief in that Word? James 1:23, 24
12. What other two words does James 1:25 use to describe a person that does not do the Word?
13. Now the question is, is it the fault of the hearer that he is in unbelief or does the fault lie somewhere else, maybe even with the preacher or God( as some teachers teach)? Give evidence for your answer from this passage as to the reason for the unbelief.
14. According to verse 3, we who have believed have entered into “rest”. Instead of God’s rest however, the children of Israel received God’s wrath. They simply did not_____________________ God’s promises. And so they received God’s (Jude 15) _____________________________ for their unbelief. 15. Now we begin another example used to help us understand what “rest” is being discussed here. From verse 3b-4, Also see Exodus 20:11, who is resting?_________________________ What is he resting from? ______________________________________
15. The connection is made between the 7th day of creation and the statement to the children of Israel in the wilderness. What is the point given in the last four words of verse 4?
16. Clearly we see that God continues to sustain all the laws of the universe, holding them together by his power (Colossians 1:17; Hebrews 1:3) But the work of Creation is done. He is __________________ from that work. NOTE: David’s quote from Psalm 95 comes 350 years after Moses.
17. The primary issue of this passage is not the rest to be gained in Canaan for the children of Israel. What two phrases in verses 6-8 maker this clear? NOTE: “Jesus” written in verse 8, is the Greek word for Joshua, and it is Joshua of the Old Testament who is spoken of in this verse.
18. From verse 9 we see that God’s promise of “rest” to the people of God refers to a ____________________ _____________. And that that “rest” is only available to ____________ ___________ ___________________, the people of God.
DIFFERENT VIEWS OF WHAT IS THE REST BEING SPOKEN VERSE 10: -1. From verse 10 we see that in order to enter into God’s rest, we must ___________________ _____________ _____________ ______________ ______________________.
This phrase refers to our ___________________________. Romans 1:16 -2.
We enter into this “rest” by ______________________.Ephesians 2:8
The maturation( or sanctification) in our walking in the “rest” of God comes also by __________________.
Colossians 2:6 -3. We see from Revelation 14:13 that when a believer dies he ________________________________.-4.
Notice that the pronoun has changed from “us” seen in the above verses to “He” in this verse. We have been studying the superiority of our great High Priest Jesus Christ (Hebrews 3:1).
Hebrews 4:14 connects all that has gone before to His priesthood on our behalf. If we look at verse 10 as referring to the person and work of the Messiah of Israel. We see the connection of the of creation having been” finished” and God’s rest from that work is made to the ______________ of Messiah having also been “finished” so that now Jesus is also resting from _________ ______________. Verse 10
