Read: Hebrews 2:1-18

Learn: Hebrews 2:9-10

But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

10 For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

1. When was man given all authority over the creation?  Genesis 1:27, 28

2. How much of the creation was put under the authority of man? Verse 8b

3. According to verse 8c, there has been a change from the original position of man over the creation. What is different now than when man was first created?

4. What happened to cause the change from the original position that man held over the creation to the present state?  Genesis 3:17-19; Romans 5:12; Romans 8:20

5. What phrase in verse 8 tells us that what we see today in the world regarding man’s position over creation is not the final state of things?

6. What is the word in verse 9 that points out to us that there is a contrast between man’s position and the position of Jesus?

7. In contrast to man’s position, what is true of our Lord Jesus? v 9c

8. Though Jesus is now crowned with glory and honour, what was his position for a period of time? v 9a

     

9. How does that position that Jesus took equate to the position of man?

10. Though Jesus always was and is fully God, what are some of his divine prerogatives that he voluntarily waived when he took on the form of man? John 17:5; Matthew 24:36

11. What compelled Jesus who is God to so humble himself for us? v 9d

12. When and how was it decided that Jesus the son would take on the form of man and bear our sins?  Acts 2:22, 23; I Peter 1:18-20

13. Was the fact that God would do all this for mankind kept a secret until Jesus came and carried out the plan?

14. What was the overriding purpose of the humbling of Jesus? v 9e   Also see Hebrews 2:14

15. This whole humbling of Jesus in order to die for us as a concept beyond our comprehension. What could God possibly plan to gain by doing all this for us?  v 10b

16. What is again brought to our attention concerning Jesus and all that he gave up for us in verse 10a?

17. Explain what is meant by the phrase “captain of our salvation?”  Hebrews 5:9; I Peter 3:18

18. How was Jesus, the captain of our salvation “made perfect” through sufferings?

21. Verse 11 says that both He (Jesus) that did the “sanctifying” and we (those that he did sanctify) are all of one. What does that mean? Acts 17:28; Daniel 5:23c

22. Because Jesus has sanctified us and because we are all of “one”, what does he tell us in verse 11?

23. Because all people have their life from God does that indicate that all people are called (or given the benefit of) Jesus “brethren?”
