Hebrews Lesson 30

Learn: Psalm 111:10

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

Read: Hebrews 11:24-40

NOTE: Here is some history concerning who was the daughter of Pharaoh. I Kings 6:1 states that the fourth year of Solomon’s reign (966 BC) was 480 years after the children of Israel left Egypt. That means that the exodus (from Biblical chronology) would have occurred in 1446 BC, and that the fall of Jericho would be around 1406 BC or soon after. According to Exodus 7:7 Moses was 80 years old at the time of the exodus. He was born, therefore, around 1526 BC when Thutmoses I was Pharaoh of Egypt. It was his daughter, therefore, who was the “daughter of Pharaoh” in the Biblcal account.

Pharaoh’s daughter was named Hatshepsut. History tells us that she married her half-brother, Thutmoses II, who died after a very short reign. Thutmoses III was the son her husband by his harem wife- not her son. Before Thutmoses III could take over the rule of Egypt, Hatshepsut ruled as “Queen” of Egypt for at least 20 years. In our opinion, she is undoubtedly the “daughter of Pharaoh” in the Biblical account of Moses.   Hocking, D. (2007). The messiah of Israel. Tustin, CA: HFT Publications, p. 325, 326

Knowing the power, influence, and wealth of Queen Hatshetsup, this is indeed evidence of how our choices reveal our priorities. Moses was being groomed as the Pharaoh of Egypt; That’s the same as saying he could have been “King of the World” at that time in human history. Now consider what Moses refused. Hocking, D. (2007). The messiah of Israel. Tustin, CA: HFT Publications, p. 327

  1. Read Exodus 2:11-15 for background of Moses’ choice. How did Moses demonstrate his identification with the children of Israel rather than with the Egyptians?
  2. Read Acts 7:23-24, what phrase in these verse shows that Moses did not view himself as an Egyptian, though he had the rank and privilege of being the Pharaoh’s daughter’s son?
  3. What 4 hardships did Moses’ choice to be identified with Israel bring to him?  vv 25a, 26a, 27b, 27c. How do we know that Moses understood the cost of his choice?  v25
  4. What 2 things did Moses know about the enjoyment offered by this world? v 25
  5. Give examples from Scripture of people who forgot what Moses knew about the enjoyment of the pleasures of this world and what sin it caused in their life.
  6. What were the treasures of Egypt that Moses could have had, had he not chosen to go God’s way? v26, Acts 7:21, 22
  7. What does I Timothy 6:10 tell us about making the wrong choice when it comes to the riches and treasures of this world?
  8. Concerning Moses’ relationship to the Egyptians who had adopted him, Moses __________________  ____  _____  _______________________  _______  ________  _____  ______________________  ___________________. v 24  Moses______________________  _____________________ and the good will of the king. v 27.
  9. Moses made the choice to leave the world and follow God’s will based on __________________.       vv  24, 27
  10. What did Moses know and understand first of all, that led to his decision? v 27b
  11. What encouragement did Moses have to carry him through the difficulties that his decision to obey God brought him? v 26b
  12. Where did Moses go when he forsook Egypt and all that that life had had to offer him? Acts 7:29
  13. How long did Moses stay? Acts 7:30a
  14. Moses had a home and was settled in Midian, there he led the life of a shepherd, far away from the palaces and riches of Egypt. According to Acts 7:30-36a. What call did the Lord place on Moses after living 40 quiet years in the hills of Midian?
  15. All through the ordeal of getting Pharaoh to let Israel leave the slavery of Egypt, Moses followed God’s direction and did what God told him to do (Exodus 7-11). He lived by faith. How did Moses again demonstrate his faith in God as seen in verse 29?
  16. Using Exodus 12:1-13, give a brief description of the Passover that Moses kept by faith.
  17. What would move Moses and the people to obey God in this matter, though no such thing had happened before? Exodus 12:12, 13 So we see that though we know that God loves us and wants the best for us, there should be an element of ___________  we should be __________________ of his __________________________    Psalm 119:120 which motivates us to obey the Lord for God is faithful to do whatever he has said he will do. Isaiah 14:24. See also Hebrews 11:7.For how long were the children of Israel commanded to keep the celebration of the Passover which was instituted by God at the time when Moses led the people out of Egypt? Exodus 12:14
  18. Having finally left Egypt after 450 years, the children of Israel escaped the cruel hand of Pharaoh by the judgment of God upon Pharaoh and his land. But once Pharaoh got over the immediate grief, his sorrow turned to anger and revenge (Exodus 14:1-31) In Hebrews 11:29, we see a change of pronoun from he, who is Moses to ________________ (speaking of_____________________________________________________________).
  19. We see then that though Moses the leader had to live by faith, so also did every ________ who was part of the nation. Hebrews 11:29As the Egyptians attempted the same crossing through the Red Sea on dry land that they had seen the Israelites make, why were they drowned?

Hebrews 4:2
Jude 4b
Proverbs 1:29,30

  1. 20.What new thing did you learn from studying the faith of Moses?
