Hebrews Lesson 19

Learn: Jeremiah 31:35-37

35 Thus saith the Lord, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The Lord of hosts is his name:

36 If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the Lord, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever.

37 Thus saith the Lord; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the Lord.

Read: Hebrews 8: 1-13

  1. The “old or first covenant” refers to the Law of Moses. What is the proof that the 1st covenant is not sufficient to meet the requirements for right standing with God? v 7
  2. What was Paul’s description of the Law of Moses in Romans 7:12 that seems to contradict that expressed in Hebrews 8:7?
  3. We know that there is no error or contradiction in God’s Word so there is need to look further to discover where our understanding needs to be increased. Looking ahead in Hebrews 8 to verse 9, we see that the ineffectiveness to save was not the Law itself, but it was___________________________________________________________________________ _______.
  4. What are we told in Romans 3:9-12 is the condition of every person when it comes to keeping of God’s Law as given through Moses?

    E. Since God has stated this PROMISE of his relationship to Israel in so many places in the Scripture, what can be the reason that people who claim to be Christians insist that God has abandoned Israel and that neither the PROMISE of the land nor the other PROMISES that he gave to Israel are any longer in effect?

    F. Jeremiah 31:1-3 What is God’s PROMISE concerning his love for the nation of Israel. How is this PROMISE of the LORD for Israel manifested to her?

    G. Jeremiah 31:10-14 Along with restoration of the relationship of God to his people Israel, God. PROMISES to restore his ___________________ ______________ which will be evident to all when they see Israel’s prosperity. Their sorrow willed be turned into joy, God will bring them comfort in knowing the goodness of the Lord.

NOTE: The above eight facts about the New covenant reveal why it was needed and why the Old covenant was not effective—because the people could not keep it. The phrase “the days come” will bring the results from the wonderful provision of the New Covenant.
