Learn: Ephesians 1:20-23
20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, 21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: 22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, 23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.
Read: Hebrews 8: 1-13
- What are the words of verses 1 and 2 that declare the EXALTATION of the ministry of Jesus Christ by God?
- Use the following passages and –List the phrases– that further describe how the ministry of Jesus has been EXALTED by the Father: Ephesians 1:20-23, Philippians 2: 9-11, Colossians 1:18, 19, Colossians 2:9, 10, Hebrews 1:3
- From what we have learned in the above passages; What is the exalted POSTION of Jesus, What is the PLACE of his exaltation?
- What is the duty of every high priest? v 3a From verse 1 we are again reminded that Jesus is our high priest, so what is it necessary that he be able to do? v 3b NOTE: The Greek word here used for “offer” is present tense showing that the earthly priest offers or continues to offer sacrifice over and over. In the same verse we have a different word for “offer” which refers to Jesus as High Priest, this word is aorist tense in Greek referring to ONE ACT, not many.
- What does verse 4 reveal that makes us understand that Jesus is a superior high priest to those of the Levitical priesthood?
- What does verse 5a tell us about the purpose of the Levitical high priest’s service? NOTE: The word “example” is the Greek word hupodeigma which refers to a “copy”- it literally means “to show under.”
- What further explanation of the word “shadow” as used in verse 5 to describe the priest’s service and the law is given in Colossians 2:16, 17 and Hebrews 10:1?
- What other word used in verse 5 further clarifies that the law and its sacrificial system which was carried out in the tabernacle, though it was given to Moses, was not that which could give forgiveness or salvation? NOTE: “Pattern” is the Greek word tupon which gives us our English word “type.” The law of Moses gave us a sacrificial system that was pointing to a future sacrifice.
- Since the law and the sacrificial system was only an example, a shadow, a pattern, that pointed to the future sacrifice, what then was the purpose of the law and the sacrifices that people made all those years from the time of Moses forward? Romans 3:10, 20; 8:3
- What did the bringing of the prescribed sacrifices for sin by an individual demonstrate that they believed? Genesis 3:15; Leviticus 17:11; John 1:29
- Who is the “he” spoken of inverse 6? Use Scripture passages to justify your answer.
- Verse 6 begins with the words “but now” to illustrate to us that what is stated here concerning the new ministry, which is of Christ is,__________________________ to the previous ministry of the Levitical priesthood.
- From verse 6, What are the two indicators of Jesus’ superior, more excellent ministry, to the ministry of the Levitical high priests which the Jewish people knew listed?
- The previous way of sacrifice carried out by the Levitical priests was only the picture, and therefore inadequate to save, but the sacrifice of Jesus was the___________________sacrifice because it was carried out in the ___________________ tabernacle which the Lord pitched and not______________. Hebrews 8:2
