EXODUS –LESSON 48

LEARN: Matthew 5: 14-16

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Read Exodus 27: 9-21

1.Verses 9-16, 18 of Exodus 27 give instructions for the construction of the court of the Tabernacle. The Tabernacle itself took up only about one-fifteenth of this area. Draw a diagram, labeling each side of the court with its given dimensions.

2. What were the walls of the court made of? v 9

3. What was made to hold up the walls of the court? vv 10 -12

4. What was different on the east side wall of the court, and how was it constructed? vv 13-16

5. What precious metal was to be used in the pillars and hooks for the court? v 17

6. What were all the many vessels for service in the Tabernacle which had not previously been mentioned to be made of? v 19

NOTE: Bronze was the commonest metal of the time, but one very suitable for the various purposes, being, as the Egyptians manufactured it, of great hardness, yet exceedingly ductile and ready to take all shapes. Its usefulness and convenience caused it to be retain its place, even in the gorgeous temple of Solomon.  THE PULPIT COMMENTARY     THE BOOK OF EXODUS   p 274

7. What was the people’s duty concerning the oil for the lamp? v 20

8. The bringing of the oil may have seemed a small matter, but what in these instructions showed that it was most important to God? v 21b

9. What was the specific kind of oil and manner of production? v 20

NOTE: The oil was to be made with extra effort by carefully pounding with the hand, rather than the rough mechanical crushing in mills. Oil so made would be of finer quality, burning more brightly, and with less smoke.

10. What was the priest’s duty concerning the oil? v 21

11. Using what we have learned from verses 20, 21, we understand that God’s desire for the light

obtained from the lamps was to be ____________, _______________, and ________________.

NOTE: As with every other part of the Tabernacle and its service, the oil and the light produced by it, were representations of Truth that God wanted the people to understand. The priests were to take every care that the house of God would never be dark, or even obscure, but be ready for worship, ever illuminated, ever prepared for any visitation of its Lord, who might come at any hour.

12. Find Scripture that explains who is the “True Light” that is represented by the light put forth by the burning of the oil.

13. According to John 1:4-9, do all people benefit from the Light? Explain.

14. Why do people refuse the Light and all that He offers? John 3: 19, 20

15. Can a person “sit on the fence” so to speak thinking that they are not choosing for or against the Light that is Jesus? John 3:18, Explain.

16. What is required so that a person can receive the benefit of the Light that God offers?  John 3:36

17. Use the following Scriptures to show just a few benefits of what the True Light illuminates to all that are enlightened by him:
Colossians 2:2, 3

Matthew 4:15-17

Psalm 36:9

Psalm 43:3

John 8:12

Ephesians 5:14-17

Revelation 21:23

18. Use the following Scripture to explain the change that takes place in the life of a person who receives the Light of Christ into his life. John 1:12; John 3:16; John 3:5, 6; II Corinthians 5:17

19. Once a person has accepted the Light of Christ into their life, what do they become according to           I Peter 2: 5?

20. Just as the holy priesthood of the Tabernacle was to make sure that the light was constant, pure and bright, we too are to keep the Light of Christ visible in our lives at all times, pure and unadulterated with the things of the world, so that all the world can see Him and believe on His name. Find Scripture that declares this command for every believer.

21. How should we as beneficiaries of the Light regard the command of God to show the Light of Jesus to the world?  II Corinthians 4:6, 7

22. In Matthew 25:1-13, we have the parable of the virgins. The virgins represent those who are looking for the Messiah of Scripture to come. The bridegroom represents Jesus the Messiah returning for his own. The oil in this parable represents the Holy Spirit, who is given to indwell and to empower those who have accepted the Light, Jesus Christ. Using Romans 8:9-11, 16, 17 explain why the 5 foolish virgins were not ready and so were not accepted to the Marriage Supper of the Bridegroom. – They could not enter into the Kingdom of God.
