EXODUS –LESSON 46

And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: 28 so Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

In Exodus chapter 25 we find the instructions for the making of the sacred furniture which the Tabernacle is to contain, except for the Altar of Incense, which is given in chapter 30. The instructions for the Tabernacle itself are given in chapter 26. This was to consist of three main things-1. A quadrangular enclosure thirty cubits long by 10 cubits wide, open at one end. 2. A tent, supported upon poles to cover it. 3. 1.Verses 1-6 describe curtains of which the Tabernacle was made. What is the material and the color of these curtains? v 1

NOTE: Fine-twined linen is linen the threads of which are formed of several fine strands twisted together. This word used is Egyptian, the linen was seldom dyed, and was of a beautiful soft white hue. The fineness of the material was extraordinary.   PULPIT COMMENTARY   THE BOOK OF EXODUS   P 240

2. What was important about the size of the curtains? v 2

3. We see in verse 3 that once completed, the curtains were to be sewn together, 5 curtains to each section. How were the curtain sections then attached to each other to make the Tabernacle? vv 4-6

4. Verses 7-13 describe the tent cloth covering. What was this tent to be made from? v 7

5. What is the difference in size and amount of these curtains verses the linen curtains of the tabernacle itself?  vv 1,2, 7, 8  

6. This tent covering was to be put together in the same manner as the linen curtains were attached. What as different in the attachment of the curtains between the two? vv 4-6, 10, 11 

7. The outer protection of the tabernacle is described in verse 14. Some believe that there are two outer coverings. What were the coverings made of?

8. The structure on which all the tents and coverings were hung is described in verses 15-30. What kind of wood was used in this construction?

NOTE: Verses 18-20 speaks of direction concerning the building of the Tabernacle. The Orientals regarded it as natural to look to the east, and spoke of the east as “in front,” the west as “behind,” the north as “on the left,” and the south as “on the right hand.”  PULPIT COMMENTARY, THE BOOK OF EXODUS, P. 263

NOTE: The poles of wood were not to be stuck into the ground, but were to be fitted by means of “tenons.” Possibly projecting rods such as are used in our dinner tables (braces between the legs and the top).

9. What was used to hold the structure together? vv 24, 25, 26-28

10. What was done to the boards? v 29, What were the rings for the bars made from?

11. How did Moses know how to construct anything that pertained to the making of the Tabernacle not expressly described in these Scriptures?   v 30

12. What are 3 reasons by which Moses could be sure that he would remember all that the LORD had instructed him to do in the making of the tabernacle correctly?  Exodus 26:30; II Peter 1:20, 21; John 14:26

13. Finally, there were two veils to be made for the tabernacle. The instructions for the first veil is in verses 31-33. How did the appearance of this veil compare to the rest of the Tabernacle curtains?  v 1                   

NOTE; Josephus reported that the veil was four inches thick, was renewed every year, and that horses tied to each side could not pull it apart. It barred all but the High Priest from the presence of God.  RYRIE STUDY BIBLE, Comments on Exodus 26:31-35

14. How and where was this first veil to be hung?  vv 32, 33

20. When Jesus died on the cross what happened to that first veil which had always separated everyone from the Most Holy Place containing the Ark of the Covenant, the place where God was to be met?  Matthew 27:50, 51

21. According to Hebrews 9:11, 12, 14, what did the tearing of the vail from the top to the bottom show to all mankind?
