EXODUS –LESSON 35
LEARN: Ezekiel 20:7-11
Then said I unto them, Cast ye away every man the abominations of his eyes, and defile not yourselves with the idols of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.
8 But they rebelled against me, and would not hearken unto me: they did not every man cast away the abominations of their eyes, neither did they forsake the idols of Egypt: then I said, I will pour out my fury upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt. 9 But I wrought for my name’s sake, that it should not be polluted before the heathen, among whom they were, in whose sight I made myself known unto them, in bringing them forth out of the land of Egypt.
10 Wherefore I caused them to go forth out of the land of Egypt, and brought them into the wilderness. 11 And I gave them my statutes, and shewed them my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them.
11 And I gave them my statutes, and shewed them my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them.
READ: Exodus 20:1-17
1.What is the 5th commandment? It is given in verse 8.
2. Use verse 10 to define the word Sabbath as used in the Scripture.
3. How does the Sabbath set parameters on the work week? vv 9, 10
4. What is the basis for defining man’s week in this way? v 11
5. Keeping the Sabbath should be considered a privilege rather than a burden. Explain. Exodus 23:12; 20:11
NOTE: We know from history that there is no parallel in written codes or in actual practice of other nations for kindness and care for their animals. Animal suffering was generally regarded as of small account in the ancient world; and the idea of protecting animals from ill usage was wholly unknown. It is plain that the law tried to subdue that coarse turn of mind and unfeeling cruelty, which are engendered by the maltreatment of animals. PULPIT COMMENTARY The Book Of Exodus p 133
6. We see God’s special care for the animals in keeping the Sabbath, verse 10. From the following verses describe other provisions that the LORD made in his kindness and care for domestic animals.
Exodus 23:5, 12
Leviticus 1:5
Leviticus 22:27
Deuteronomy 25:4
Genesis 8:1; 9:8-11
Jonah 4:11
7. What is the difference between the provision that God made for the care of the animals (as recorded in the Scriptures of the previous question) and many people’s view of an animal’s place that we see in our world today?
8. What is the cause of confusion as to what is the proper position of animals? Find Scripture to explain your answer.
9. Is keeping of the Sabbath a command that applies to all people? Use the following Scripture to explain your answer. Exodus 31:13-17
10. There are those who call themselves Christian who wrongly make the keeping of the Sabbath a requirement for relationship with God. But we know from the Exodus 31 passage that keeping the seventh day- the Sabbath- applies only to the nation of Israel. What does the Scripture teach concerning others (not Jews) who call the God of Israel their God and have trusted in his Son for salvation is required as to setting aside a certain time to meet together with those who are like minded to honor the Lord? Find Scripture to validate your answer.
NOTE: The 5th commandment concerning the keeping of the Sabbath is the only one of the TEN COMMANDMENTS that is not reinstated in the New Testament as a requirement for the church.
11. How does the 5th commandment (verse 8-11) defend and give constant reminder of how our world and all that is in it, including man, came into existence?
12. Give as many other Scriptures as you can that teach that God literally created the world and all things and life in in in six literal 24 hour days.
13. How does Hebrews 4:4, 9, 10 when it speaks of God resting on the seventh day help a believer in Christ understand the rest that the Lord provides for us? Also see Ephesians 2:8, 9.
14. What is the 6th commandment? v 12a
15. What is the reason given for obeying this command? v 12b
16. According to Deuteronomy 21:18-21, how would a child of the nation of Israel who did not honor his parents have his life cut short?
17. We see this same command reiterated in the New Testament. According to Ephesians 6:1-3: Why should children obey their parents?
What is special about this commandment?
What is the benefit of keeping this Commandment?
18. Find other Scripture that gives the Commandment to obey or honor parents which add additional information to what we have already learned.
