EXODUS –LESSON 33

Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

1.Back in verse 8 we see that the people had agreed to do what God commanded. Now, both the people and the mountain were to be prepared before the meeting with the LORD, for God is holy, and men are sinners. Therefore, Moses was to “sanctify” the people for two days before they would meet the LORD. Is sanctification an inward or outward act?Explain your answer with Scripture.

2. What was the visible symbol of the sanctification?  v 10b

3. Why was it necessary to set bounds around the mountain from which the LORD would speak to the people?  v 12

4. What was required by the LORD If any man or beast should touch the mountain? v 13

5. What is the purpose of such strict and awful measures to keep man or beast from even touching the border of the place where God will manifest himself to the people?     Leviticus 10:10, 11; Isaiah 6:1-5

6. What was the signal that the people should come near to the mount to hear God speak to them? v 13b

7. According to verses 14, 15, what did Moses do after being given instruction by the LORD?

8. What is the reason for the people being told to abstain from sexual relations? I Corinthians 7:5

9. How did God manifest his presence to the people on the third day? v 16

14. What is the evidence that God was actually present, and that there were not just manifestations of  storm and tempest, and so on?  Deuteronomy 4:12, 13a, 33

15. As regards verse 19, we may conclude that the trumpet’s blast was not continuous. It sounded when the manifestation began (verse 16.) It sounded again much louder and with a much more prolonged note, to herald the actual descent of God upon the mount. This time the sound was so piercing, so terrible. What was the result? v 19

16. As Moses spoke to God at this time, what did the LORD do? v 20

17. What was the command given by God to Moses as he was up in the mount with God?  vv 21, 22

18. In verse 10, we see that ALL the people were called to sanctify themselves in order to meet with the LORD. What does verse 22 indicate about the priests?

19. Despite the previous preparation of the fence around the mount and the warning of what would happen to man or animal that touched the mount, Moses was instructed to warn again. Who was especially mentioned in this warning? vv 22, 24, What would be the reason for this?   

20. What was Moses’ answer to the LORD concerning God’s warning of the people breaking through to come up into the mount? v 23

21. Did Moses’ confidence concerning that the steps taken to keep the people out of the mount would be sufficient deterrent convince the LORD? Explain. v 24a, v 24c    

22. Who was allowed to come up into the mount with Moses? v 24b

23. We see the phrase “break forth upon them,” used in verses 22 and 24. According to verse 21, what is meant by this phrase?

24. Use II Samuel 6:6, 7 to explain further the phrase “break forth upon them.”

25. How many times in this passage does the LORD warn the people of the hazard they face if they come up into the holy mount?

26. What do all these warnings from God to the people tell us about the nature of God and man’s relationship to him?  Use Scripture to verify your answer.

27. What do these warnings tell us about God’s concern for mankind?  Find Scripture to prove you conclusion.

28. Study Hebrews 12:18-24. Explain the difference between the nation of Israel’s coming to Mount Sinai to meet God, and believers in Jesus who come to Mount Zion to meet God.
