EXODUS –LESSON 29
LEARN: 2 Corinthians 5:9-11
We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;
9 Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;
10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.
READ: Exodus 17:8-16
1.Who were the people of Amalek that attacked Israel? Genesis 36:12
2. What was the relationship of Amalek to Israel throughout the coming years? Numbers 14:41-45, Numbers 24:20, Deuteronomy 25:17, 19, I Samuel 14:47, 48, I Samuel 15:1-8, I Samuel 27:7-9, I Samuel 30: 1, 2; 16-18, I Chronicles 4:41-43
3. Using the passage of Deuteronomy 25:17-19, describe the nature of the original attack of Amalek upon Israel, and the success of that attack. This is that attack which is continued in this chapter 17.
4. From the manner in which the Amalekites attacked Israel, what can you learn about their character?
5. It was probably evening when Moses heard of the attack on the rear. What did Moses do? v 9
6. This is the first mention of Joshua. What position is he given in the nation of Israel? vv 9, 10a
7. In verse 9 we see that Moses took the “rod of God” with him to the top of the hill. What did this indicate? Also see Exodus 4:17; 14:13-16
8. Who accompanied Moses to the top of the hill? v 10
9. What is known about the two men who accompanied Moses? Also see Exodus 4:14-16; I Chronicles 2:4, 18-20; Exodus 31:1-3; Exodus 24:12-14.
10. As the battle progressed, what determined which army prevailed? v 11
11. The elevation of Moses’ hand, with the rod held in it, was an appeal to God for aid. And must be supposed to have been accompanied by fervent prayer to God that he would help his people defeat their enemies. What difficulty seemed to overcome Moses, and how was the dilemma solved? v 12
12. We see that the LORD is teaching the nation and us the importance of intercessory prayer by the visible means of Moses’ hand either lifted or lowered. God made success and failure alternate with its continuance and discontinuance. We seldom understand that our continued prayer on the behalf of others is what the Lord uses to intervene for help in their lives. Find several verses that command us to pray in this way on the behalf of other believers or for the salvation of the lost.
13. We can not underestimate the importance of the part that Aaron and Hur played in the final outcome of the battle. Moses’ arms must have quickly become too tired for him to continue to hold them up, no matter how much he desired to do so. Without the support of Aaron and Hur, the battle would have been lost. What does this example of their service to Moses teach us as believers?
14. Find Scripture that teaches the diversity of gifts which are given by the Holy Spirit, and the necessity of each believer using whatever gift they have for the service of the body of Christ and for the glory of God.
15. What is indicated in verse 13 concerning who came with Amalek to fight Israel?
16. How long did the battle last, and what was the final outcome? vv 12, 13
17. As we know from Scripture Moses was already keeping a book, at the command of God, recording all that the LORD wanted the children of Israel to remember in the ages to come concerning his work on their behalf. What three specific reasons did the LORD give as the purpose for recording this particular event in the book? v 14
18. What is a memorial, and what purpose do they play in our lives? For help see Exodus 12:26, 27; Joshua 4:6, 7.
19. In order for a memorial to be effective, what must continually be done? v 14
20. What was the specific reason that the LORD ordered this perpetual hostility against Amalek? Deuteronomy 25:17-19
21. After the battle was won, what did Moses do and why? vv 15, 16
22. What is the meaning of Jehovah-nissi?
